There’s no doubt that we’d all take a bullet for our dogs, but if we’re being honest, sometimes they can be a huge headache, too. This is especially true if you’ve got a hyperactive and destructive dog at home.

But don’t worry! In this article, we’ll give you some practical tips and tricks that you can use when dealing with a destructive pooch at home.

How to deal with a destructive dog

Before we discuss how to deal with a destructive dog, it’s important to understand why dogs become like this in the first place.

For many dogs, the main reason is boredom. That’s right – your dog ripped your pillows apart and trashed a month’s worth of tissue paper simply because he was bored.

Other times, the problem is more serious. Maybe they’re frustrated or stressed out due to their environment. Maybe they’re not feeling well. Or, if it only happens when you’re away, maybe your dog has separation anxiety.

Regardless of the reason, here are a few tips to help you deal with the destructiveness:

  • Make sure they get complete nutrition. Your dog’s nutrition matters a lot. If they’re not getting their complete nutrition, they become more prone to sickness. And if they don’t feel well, it can make them more moody, agitated, and even destructive.
  • Provide regular exercise. As mentioned above, bored dogs who don’t get any exercise are typically the most destructive ones. If they have plenty of pent-up energy, it can manifest in the form of zoomies or destroyed items and furniture.
  • Stimulate them mentally. A dog that is mentally stimulated tends to be calmer and more relaxed. If you want, you can try easy mental exercises to stimulate your dog’s mind and prevent them from being bored.
  • Give them dog toys and chews. The best way to distract a dog from chewing furniture is to give them something else to chew on. This could be in the form of their favorite toys and chews.
