The Benefits of Olive Oil for Dogs

pet care

Hey, I’m Richie, the founder of PetFitness. For many who don’t know, PetFitness was inspired by my dog, Driggs. His youth and glowing skin are partially due to the addition of olive oil into his diet. Just as olive oil is such an important staple of the human diet, the same is true for dogs.

Olive oil is not only safe for dogs — it’s great for them!

4 Key Benefits of Olive Oil

1.) It’s good for your dog’s skin and coat: Olive oil contains phytonutrients, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids that will keep your dog’s skin moisturized and healthy. These nutrients add shine and strength to your dog’s coat and hair. We recommend extra virgin olive oil as it has lower acidity.

2.) It helps your dog maintain a healthy body weight: The monounsaturated fats naturally found in olive oil help break down excess fat inside of cells and lower cholesterol. Furthermore, by adding small amounts of olive oil to your dog’s food, you can stimulate their digestive system as olive oil acts as a laxative.

3.) It improves the taste and consistency of your dog’s food: If your dog is hesitant to eat his/her food, try adding in a little olive oil to enhance the taste, consistency, and texture of the food —especially when feeding your dog dry food.

4.) It boosts your dog’s immune system: Olive oil contains powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants can boost your dog’s immune system, helping it fight off a wide variety of viruses and diseases.

Serving Suggestions

Add a teaspoon (for a 30-40 pound dog) to a tablespoon (for a 90-pound dog) to your dog’s food, daily or weekly. Feel free to switch out olive oil for coconut or fish oil to spice things up from time to time.

Olive oil is a fantastic (and tasty) addition to your dog’s diet, and just like it’s helped Driggs look half his age, we hope it does the same for your furry friend!
