Welcome to our third edition of the PetFitness Dog of the Month, where feature dogs that give off positive energy and exemplify all things lovable.

For this month of March 2022, we’ve got this feisty little fluffball, Remi the Pomeranian!

Thank you so much to Courtney, Remi’s mom, for indulging us in this interview!

What is your dog’s name, age, gender, and current location?

My little guy’s name is Remi and he will be turning two years old in April! We live in Cleveland, [Ohio]!

What type of dog breed?

Remi is a blue merle parti Pomeranian.

Why did you decide to get your dog?

I got Remi during the summer of 2020 when we were on lockdown for COVID. It was tough to have to social distance from family and friends, so I got Remi as a little companion.

Remi has brought so much joy to my life during what was, and still continues to be, a stressful time. I look forward to his kisses when I come home from work every day!

So, can you take us through the first day you got Remi?

I went to go check him out on a Friday after work. On my way there, I told myself not to be 100% committed just in case something didn’t work out so I wouldn’t want to get my hopes up but as soon as I laid eyes on him, I knew he was coming home with me that day!

It was late by the time we got home, so I let him wander around and explore the apartment for a little bit before going to bed. I put together a makeshift dog bed in a big laundry basket with a blanket.

He was only 2.5 pounds when I first got him, so I didn’t think he would be able to escape, but when I woke up in the morning and reached down to pet him in the laundry basket next to my bed, he wasn’t there!

I jumped up and found him sitting just outside the laundry basket with his tail wagging, looking very proud that he found a way to escape!

Luckily, that was our last night in that apartment as we were preparing to move so there wasn’t anything for him to have gotten into overnight to hurt himself.

Do you have any pictures of Remi as a puppy?

Yes, I do! But I regret not taking more photos of him as a puppy! It seems like he grew up so fast.

What’s Remi’s current eating schedule like? What do you feed him?

Remi is a grazer and will nibble at his food all day long. I give him his daily scoop of kibble in the morning and he usually eats about half of it, and then will eat a few more bites here and there throughout the day.

He is currently eating Taste of the Wild. I also supplement his dog kibble with some human foods, usually whatever I am eating. Some of his favorite human foods include apples, carrots (although he only likes them if they are cooked!), cheese, and, of course, chicken.

What’s your favorite exercise to do with Remi in the PetFitness plan?

I love doing indoor hurdles with Remi! We live in Cleveland, OH and the winters here can be cold and dark. While Remi will gladly play in the snow, I prefer having the option of doing indoor exercise with him this time of the year!

We have a lot of fun making hurdles out of toilet paper rolls. To challenge him, I will stack two toilet paper rolls on top of each other to make a taller hurdle, or put a couple of rows of toilet paper rolls together to make an obstacle course with multiple hurdles!

Another great part about toilet paper hurdles is that it’s super easy to put together without having to buy any additional equipment.

What’s Remi’s preferred toy?

Remi’s favorite toy is an extra small Kong squeaky tennis ball!

One of his favorite things to do is play fetch in the field near our apartment. On cold weather days, we’ll play fetch down a long hallway in our apartment.

He still has his “puppy energy” and is an active pup so fetch is a great way to get his exercise in!

What’s Remi’s preferred human food to have as an occasional snack?

Without a doubt, chicken! He turns [into] a very obedient boy when he sees me pull the chicken out of the refrigerator! To keep it healthy and safe, I only give him white meat pieces without skin or bone.

What’s one thing Remi does that annoys you?

When I’m sitting on the couch and he wants attention, he walks along the back of the sofa like a cat, sits next to my head and puts his paw on my head to ask for attention.

Usually, he just wants some chest scratches and if I stop scratching him, he’ll paw at my head again until I start giving him more scratches.

What’s your biggest pet peeve with other dogs and dog owners in general?

When dog owners don’t pick up their dog’s poop. Remi can be very curious and he has rolled in another dog’s poop before (and immediately got a bath when he got home!).

What’s a cool fact about your dog that most people may not know?

Remi is named after the main character in the Disney movie “Ratatouille.” I am a big Disney fan and Ratatouille is one of my favorite Disney films! If only my Remi was as talented in the kitchen!
