How to Keep Your Dog Cool During Summer

keep your dog cool

Summer may be a wonderful season for outdoor activities with your pet, but it can also be a dangerous time for them. Unlike humans who perspire and regulate their body temperature accordingly, dogs are unable to do so as easily – making them especially vulnerable in warm weather conditions.

Due to this, it’s important that we do everything in our power to keep them cool and safe during these hot summer months. Here are a few pointers on how you can keep your dog cool in this blistering weather!

Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool During Summer

Fortunately, there are lots of easy and practical ways to keep your dog cool during the summer. Here are some tips to get you started:

Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the most critical things you can do to keep your dog cool throughout the summer.

Make sure your dog has constant access to plenty of fresh, cold water, which means their water bowl should always be full.

When you’re out and about, it’s a good idea to bring extra water with you just in case your furry friend is thirsty, as well. Bring a portable water bottle and a collapsible bowl for your dog when you go for a walk.

Give Them A Bath

If it’s safe for your particular breed of dog, try giving them a refreshing bath as the weather gets warmer.

This will not only help cool them down, but it can also help reduce ticks, fleas, and other pests that may be attracted to your pet’s fur during the warmer months.

Additionally, bathing them can prevent their fur from becoming matted with dirt, which can trap heat and make them even more uncomfortable.

Protect Them From the Sun’s Rays

Make sure your dog has access to shade both inside and outside. Like humans, dogs should also have limited exposure to direct sunlight.

If they must be outside, they should have plenty of shade. Trees are preferable, but if you don’t have trees in your backyard, you can also create a covered area using a canopy or an umbrella.

Meanwhile, if you’re going someplace else, don’t forget to bring your pet’s favorite shade shelter with them.

Provide Cool, Comfortable Bedding

Just like us, dogs also need a cool and comfortable place to sleep. Make sure their bedding is not in direct sunlight, or that it is made out of a breathable material like cotton or bamboo.

You can also provide your pup with extra cooling pads to help make them more comfortable during the summer months.

You can also fill a kiddie pool with water and let your dog splash around in it! Dogs typically love the feeling of the cool water on their bodies, and some even enjoy swimming.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke

Even with all of these precautions, your dog may still succumb to heat stroke. Fortunately, the American Kennel Club presents warning signs:

  • Strange breathing patterns
  • High rectal temperatures
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive thirst
  • Disorientation
  • Frequent vomiting
  • Dark gums or tongue

Conclusion

Summer may be a great time for you and your dog, but it’s important to keep them cool and safe. By following these tips, you’ll be able to keep your pet safe and cool during the summer months!
