Pitbulls, also known as American Pit Bull Terriers, are a controversial dog breed. They’ve been the topic of considerable discussion over the years. Some say that pitbulls are dangerous and should be banned. Others claim that they’re misunderstood and unfairly stigmatized.

The myth that Pitbulls are dangerous dogs comes from the horrifying and tragic truth that they are commonly used in illegal dogfights. So, are Pitbulls dangerous? Let’s explore this more!

Are Pitbulls Dangerous?

Many see the pitbull as an aggressive breed.

However, it’s important to remember that all breeds of dogs can show aggression if they feel threatened or provoked. And actually, pitbulls have a naturally gentle temperament and can be just as friendly as other breeds of dogs.

If raised in a loving and caring environment, with proper training and socialization, Pitbulls can be loyal, affectionate companions.

History of Pitbulls

According to the Pitbull Info and Pitbull Hero Organization, historically, “pit bull” was an informal and slang word for any dog exposed to the terrible sport of bull-baiting, which involved using dogs to seize tethered animals such as bulls within an enclosed area known as a “pit.”

Presently, the word “pitbull” refers to a wide range of medium-sized, short-haired breeds and mixes that share physical characteristics with various bully-type breeds.

4 Most Common Pitbull Breeds

There are several different breeds of pit bulls, and not all of them are the same. Here are the five most common pit bull breeds and their characteristics.

American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier has a long history of being a physically active, strong, and athletic breed that has remained true to type for more than 150 years.

The aims and purposes of this breed standard are as follows: to provide instructions for breeders who want to maintain and improve the quality of their breed; to progress this breed to a condition of similarity around the world; and to serve as a guide for judges.

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier, or AmStaff, is an intelligent, confident, and good-natured companion. A well-socialized, responsibly bred AmStaff is a loyal, trustworthy friend to the end.

Socialization is also vital for helping the breed overcome its innate aversion to other animals. This breed enjoys working and excels in sporting events, police work, and obedience training.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Although the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the most popular dog in the United Kingdom, it’s only the 80th most common breed in the United States.

Originally, owners bred them for fighting. Now, they’re popular family pets. They’re intelligent, courageous, and tenacious, perfect as a loyal companion!

American Bully

The American Bully is a breed that descended from the American Pitbull Terrier. This is a unique breed that was created in the 1980s and was officially recognized by the UKC in 2013.
